The Calabria region is celebrating the success of its agro-food products in the Canadian market, thanks to a significant agreement with “Longos Fruit Inc,” a Canadian chain of high-quality supermarkets known for promoting gastronomic excellence from around the world. This partnership aims to export Calabrian delicacies internationally and promote the region’s enogastronomic traditions, culture, and tourism. To date, over half a million euros in orders have been fulfilled, with an additional 2 million euros pending, and projections reaching 5 million euros by year’s end. These figures were presented at a meeting in the Cittadella by Regional Agriculture Councillor Gianluca Gallo, who also highlighted his connection to the newly appointed Cardinal of Toronto, Francis Leo, of Calabrian descent. Joining him was John Lettieri, a Calabrian native from Celico and co-founder of “Icjam Import – Export,” a key importer and supplier for “Longos.” Approximately twenty Calabrian companies are involved in this initiative.

Councillor Gallo emphasized the regional government’s focus on improving Calabria’s image and boosting exports, noting the significant results achieved. He expressed a desire to expand the project to include tourism development, particularly targeting the Calabrian diaspora. Gallo highlighted the success of various sectors, including confectionery, fresh produce, candies, and preserved foods, underscoring the ample opportunities for quality-driven local businesses. He also mentioned ongoing efforts to explore markets in the United States, Switzerland, and other countries, recognizing the importance of market expansion for regional development.

Regional Economic Development Councillor Rosario Varì, also present at the meeting, noted the continuous growth of Calabria’s exports, with double-digit increases each quarter. He attributed this success to the regional government’s development policies and emphasized the importance of internationalization for local businesses. Varì encouraged companies to seize these opportunities to enhance their competitiveness and presence in global markets.

This collaboration with “Longos” not only showcases Calabria’s rich culinary heritage but also strengthens its economic ties with international partners, paving the way for future growth and recognition of the region’s excellence on a global scale.
